art program presents:
Tunnel Vision:
Photographs of the Caldecott Fourth Bore Project
The Caldecott Fourth Bore Project is building a two-lane
fourth
tunnel bore north of the existing three Caldecott tunnels.
The new Fourth Bore will relieve congestion of State Route
24 between
Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the off-peak direction
by
permanently dedicating two bores to westbound traffic and
two to eastbound traffic. The tunnel is scheduled to open
to traffic in late 2013, with final project completion planned
for mid-2014.
Construction
The Caldecott Fourth Bore Project is composed
of four separate construction contracts. In addition to
construction of the Fourth Bore itself, there are two smaller
roadway improvement projects to enhance traffic flow in
the vicinity of the tunnels, as well as a future project
to landscape the area when the tunnel project is completed.
Funding
The largest funding source for the project was an
infusion of funds in 2009 from the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act. Funds from Contra Costa County Measure
J are the second largest source of funding for the project.
Total funding for four contracts is $390.8M.
Photographers
The photographs in this show were taken by
Caltrans photographer John Huseby and MTC photographer Karl
Nielsen.
