T.P. Huang
My interest in art emerged when I was no more
than ten or so. I fondly recall my younger sister
and I spending hours drawing and painting, often
to see who would get a pat on the head from our
mother. My sister pursued art and became successful
in commercial graphic design. I studied marine
biology and environmental sciences but my affinity
for art has always remained with me. Many of
my creations reflect my interest and knowledge
in those two areas. In later years, I studied
Taijiquan (or Tai Chi) and that too, is reflected
in my art. Another great source of inspiration
is nature; I incorporate natural material (seedpods,
branches, leaves, insects, etc.) found on some
of my many outdoor escapades. I chose collage
as my primary medium because it offers a tremendous
range of material for expression. It also gives
me satisfaction to be able to reuse a little
of the huge amount of material discarded by our
consumer lifestyle — a nod to my environmental
sensibility. Above all, the most gratifying aspect
of my art is the creativity and joy in making
them.
