The Metropolitan Transportation Commission presents:
Bridging East and West:
Images from the Eastern and Western Hemispheres

Photography by
Janie Page

January - September 2001

MetroCenter
101 8th Street, Oakland

As we moved from one year to the next, one century to another, into a new millennium, it became appropriate to reflect on images that bridge one place with another. From the commercial districts of Beijing, China and Santiago, Chile to the quiet contemplation of a Xi'an temple or a Maine lobster pier, the world is full of striking similarities and remarkable contrasts. This exhibit celebrated those parallels and distinctions.

Images displayed:

  • "Bridging East and West"
    Sentinel Dome, Yosemite National Park
  • "Beauty in the peaks"
South of Guilin, China and Torres del Paine, Chile
  • "Sitting like a buoy"
Xi'an, China and York Harbor, Maine
  • "Go round and round and round in the circle game"
Hutongs in Beijing & Chapel of Thanksgiving in Dallas, TX
  • "Theater companions"
A young contortionist and his friend
  • "Innovation"
Delivering the goods in Santiago, Chile
  • "Beijing rush hour, with bicycles"
And this is with minimal private automobile ownership*.
About the artist
Janie Page came to MTC to lead the ITS architecture development effort in November 1999. Her interest in travel photography began more than ten years ago as a way of documenting what makes different places unique. About the same time she started at MTC, she began taking art classes from Laura Siegel. These classes have encouraged her creative expression and continue to provide her with an increased appreciation for technique and detail.
