Statement
In
developing a philosophy or concept of painting
to direct my technique, I have adhered to the
aesthetic direction of painting formulated
over hundreds of years. For over 40 years I
have worked toward this goal of expressing
spirituality through the use of color, line
and subject matter. I have studied the great
masters of painting and have struggled to learn
to see as they see in order to express my own
perceptual philosophy of life as I see it.
There are many influences and teachers of the
past and current era that I have used for direction
and education, but primarily they consist of
Matisse and the Fauves for true expression
through color and line and Diebenkorn for his
analysis and transmittal of modern art. Others
include Lucian Freud, Jim Dine, David Park
and numerous others. I also thank my professors
in art school, where I received my degree in
painting and printmaking. In terms of direction,
I strongly believe in the transmittal of the
aesthetic by the relation of myself to the
object; in other words, the world changed in
order to express what I feel or see both intellectually
and aesthetically. In terms of execution, I
work toward expression through the direct brush
stroke and use of pure color, the development
of the idea in a plastic medium, and the use
of color relationships to express human feeling
and spirit.
