Dreamwhipped: An American Social Landscape

Paintings by Patricia Schaefer

Through September 14, 2006

The MTC Community Art Program presents “Dreamwhipped: An American Social Landscape,” in which local artist Patricia Schaefer presents paintings from her “Postwar Domestic,” “Nostalgia and Technology” and “Industrial Landscape” series.

“In these works, I invoke conventional American scenes, but with an ironic, retro-futuristic twist,” she said. The bright, oversized canvases depict scenes of motels, swimming pools, beaches, suburbs, housing tracts, gardens and other icons of post-WWII life, often with ominous elements creeping in.

“My work centers on post-war middle-class dreams and fears,” she said.

The show continues at MTC’s offices at the Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter, 3rd Floor, 101 Eighth Street in Oakland, through September 14, 2006. Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and a reception is scheduled for Thursday, August 3, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Schaefer lives in San Francisco and maintains a studio in Sausalito. She has had solo exhibitions at the California Modern Gallery in San Francisco and at several locations in New Mexico. She also has participated in numerous group exhibitions and artist residencies in California and New Mexico, and has received a number of grants and awards. Her training includes the MFA program at the San Francisco Art Institute.
