Elena Vaisberg-Targulian was born in Moscow, Russia, moving to the U.S. in 1991. She has been painting for almost 20 years. Upon initial interest, Elena took private lessons in Moscow as she experimented with different mediums, including water color and charcoal sketches. Discovering acrylic and oil as her preferred medium, Elena continued her education through workshops at the San Francisco Academy of Fine Arts and San Mateo College. Elena has lived in the Bay Area — in Foster City — since 1998. Professionally, she is a cell biologist who has worked with several biotech companies.

Artist Statement
In my paintings I try to catch a splash of a moment, whether it is real or imaginary, a passing and unpredictable feeling of its magic. A mix of what I feel, see or imagine, put in colors and forms, brings some spirit of unreality and intuitive happiness which I cherish in my work. Each painting is a journey. Even if I start painting with a clear idea, the process sometimes leads me in unpredictable directions. I follow these carefully, trying to feel a hint, until, at some point, it clicks and I immediately know that all has fallen into place. This is the most glorious moment, which invigorates my desire to paint and fires my passion.
