1999 • Douglas La Vallee, a Caltrans Tunnels and Tubes operator, rescued an elderly woman whose car was on fire in the Caldecott Tunnel in February 1996. He also worked to improve safety and training practices in the tunnel crews.

1998 • Grover Robinson is one of the most appreciated Freeway Service Patrol drivers. On the freeway he remains sharp and he likes providing service "just to get a smile."

1985 • Ray McCann and Charles Gerstbacher, gripman and brakeman on the S.F. Muni cable car that was struck head-on by a suicide driver in August 1984. The two, who were injured by the accident, were still able to avert catastrophe by pulling the brake while the car was careening out of control, thereby saving the lives of the 70 people on board.
