Intern will assist in assessing the accuracy of real-time bus information used by bus riders along the service areas. Intern will spend time in the field collecting data, and making observations, and be involved with analyzing data and drawing conclusions. Additional projects to be assigned.

Desired Skills:

  1. Familiarity with MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, Palm Pilot (helpful), and a quick learner on other software applications.
  2. Knowledge of how to use digital camera.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively; work well independently and as a team player; self starter and pleasant personality.

Intern will assist in calculating passenger counts for a variety of buses, completing run reports, entering data into collector (Palm Pilot), entering number of passengers on and off various bus lines, and conducting ride and passenger checks throughout service areas. Additional projects to be assigned.

Location: Hayward

Intern will assist with work related to grant writing, bicycle and pedestrian master plans, and the development of capital improvement projects. Perform field work, such as taking project photos, observing bicycle and pedestrian activity, and collecting land use data. Conduct office work, such as organizing transportation reports, researching data, (traffic volumes, accident info, land use, etc.), review aerial photos, and create location maps. Write reports, as well as prepare fact sheets and grant applications. If interested, the intern may learn to use specialized land use mapping software, such as Geographic Information System (GIS) software and AutoCAD (drafting) software. Intern will also be given an opportunity to work on several additional projects in various stages of development.

Intern will assist with work in the marketing and research department, including, but not limited to, helping create content for the agency’s Web site and other online marketing channels (such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and MySpace) and helping with promotion of events and venues close to transit stations.

  1. Strong oral and written communication skills (writing experience such as for a school or club newspaper, Web site, or personal blog will be a plus).
  2. Basic computer skills (such as word processing) are required (advanced skills such as Web design or photo editing will be a plus).

Intern will review plans submitted by local agencies and compare project details to those in the design standards. Assist in the evaluation of projects submitted by local agencies for safety programs. Review, cross-reference, and input collected data into an electronic database system. Assist in the preparation of exhibits for meetings with local agencies, as well as internal informational meetings. Inspect revisions to environmental reports to verify changes have been made in accordance with recommendations from environmental planners.

Desired Skills:

  1. Familiarity with various Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to, MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
  2. Sound organizational, mathematic, and reading comprehension skills.

Intern will assist with the Sidewalk Program, the Transit Plan and the Transportation Systems Management (TSM)/Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Plan (includes site visits and data management). Assist in the creation of a historic walking tour map (includes site visits). Collect data on current street conditions, and import, manage and provide analysis of data. Assist in traffic data collection, traffic studies, and the development of maps.

Desired Skills:

  1. Interest in transportation planning or engineering; conscientious worker.
  2. Familiarity with MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access.
  3. Ability to collect data from the field.

Intern will assist with bicycle/pedestrian planning activities and grant implementation tasks (such as gathering information and data from consultants/vendors for monitoring reports for granting agencies). Assist with speed and volume survey reports and with the sidewalk program (organizing electronic files and transferring data from one format to another). Field work includes measuring, sketching, taking photos and counting bicyclists and pedestrians at specific locations. Intern will also conduct field work for traffic volume and speed surveys. If interested and able, intern may work on more complex projects using mapping and drafting software (ArcGIS and AutoCAD).

Desired Skills:

  1. Knowledge of Microsoft Word is required.
  2. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel desired, but not required.
  3. Analytical and mathematical skills preferred.
  4. Attention to details.

Intern will also learn pavement and sidewalk design principles and how to read plans and specifications. Attend field meetings/field trips to learn about construction and project management. Perform field work such as measuring quantities. Organize and summarize field data using MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and Computer Aided Drafting (AutoCAD) software. Various office duties such as data entry and organizing, and updating reports and records will be assigned.

Intern will learn basic AutoCAD (drafting software) skills to prepare and design exhibits, maps and drawings. Intern will also attend field meetings/field trips to learn about traffic operations issues and concerns. Perform field work such as measuring quantities (i.e., distances between speed bumps and other street objects), taking digital photos and conducting traffic counts. Organize and summarize field data using MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and CAD software. Intern will learn basic traffic engineering practices and principles, as well as how to read project plans and specifications. Various office duties such as data entry and organizing, and updating reports and records will be assigned.

Intern will prepare small drawings using AutoCAD software. Using proprietary software, intern will scan plans and other documents and learn how to convert data from drawings to digital format. Assist with field surveys and organize and summarize gathered field data using MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and CAD software. Provide customer service to the public (including duplicating maps, researching Zone information via maps and the computer, and issuing Zone certificates). Research and qualify No Parking Zone sign locations, and work with other public agencies on additional traffic light needs and installations.

Intern will convert existing hard copy traffic signal and street lighting maps into digital format using AutoCAD software. Intern will also update the traffic signal database (using MS Access) to reflect current inventory and document changes to system.

Intern will work on various transportation and traffic projects including data entry of accident reports into a traffic database. Assist staff in completing traffic, pedestrian and bicycle counts. Assist in the preparation of stop sign analysis, crosswalk safety analysis and traffic signal analysis reports. Conduct inventory of traffic safety equipment and GIS tagging. Estimate construction quantity needs. Perform simple drafting and filing assignments. Assigned tasks might include large document scanning, filing drawings, and completion of simple calculations.

Desired Skills:

  1. Basic Math skills.
  2. Basic Microsoft Office skills (MS Excel and MS Word).
  3. Computer Aided Drafting (AutoCAD) highly desirable but not required.
