President Obama Signs 6-Month Extension of Surface Transportation Act

On September 16, President Obama signed H.R. 2887, providing an extension of surface transportation (highways and public transit) programs for six months and of the Federal Aviation Administration for the next 4 1/2 months. The bill authorizes the same level of funding as provided in FY 2011, however, the FY 2012 appropriations process will ultimately determine how much funding transportation receives. Based on proposals put forward by the House Appropriations Committee that would cut transportation funding by more than one-third, this particular budget battle appears likely to be a difficult one.
