Senate Passes MAP 21, But House Poised to Adopt a Three-Month Extension
March 2012
In a rare demonstration of bipartisanship,
on March 14, 2012, the United States Senate voted 74-22
to pass S. 1813, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st
Century (MAP 21), authorizing $109 billion in highway and
transit funding through September, 2013. The complete
text of that bill can be found here. Rather
than take up this bill, as had been suggested by House Speaker
John Boehner in early March, the House appears much more
likely to adopt the 9th short-term extension of current surface
transportation law. On March 22, House Transportation & Infrastructure
Chairman John Mica introduced H.R. 4239, which extends
current law until June 30, 2012. The House will consider
H.R. 4239 the week of March 26.
