This report basically supercedes WP #3.
6 STF3A Detailed analysis of disability and mobility limitation data from revised 1990 Census STF3A file. Data reported at regional, county and superdistrict level.
7 CTPP/UE Similar to WP #5, but looking at new journey-to-work data at MTC 34 superdistrict level. Also includes information on average commute distance and commute distance frequency distributions.
8 CTPP/UE Examination of interregional commuting patterns at the superdistrict-level of detail within the Bay Area. This report basically supercedes WP #4.

About 1990 Census Data Sources

This section describes the census data sources used in preparing MTC Working Papers and Electronic Publications.
  • STF1A. Summary Tape File 1A. This census file shows all information from the 1990 Census "short form." Data is available down to the census block level. The California version of STF1A was released February 1992.
  • STF3A. Summary Tape File 3A. This census file shows simple cross-tabulation of all variables from the 1990 Census "long form." The long form went out to one-in-eight Bay Area households. Data is available down to the census block group level. The California version of STF3A was released May 1992.
  • STFS5. Summary Tape File S5. This was a special census file of county-to-county commuters, by state, in the United States. File S5 is for California. No breakdown of commuters by means of transportation is provided. The California file of STFS5 was released December 1992.
  • CTPP/SE. Census Transportation Planning Package / Statewide Element. Also known as the "Journey-to-Work Package." The CTPP/SE dataset is a set of specialized tabulations designed by and created for metropolitan transportation planners by the US Census Bureau. Development of the Package was sponsored by the USDOT (Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration) and the AASHTO (Association of American State Highway and Transportation Officials). Data in the CTPP/SE is reported at the state, county and place level, for all places greater than 2500 total population. Data is provided for area of residence, area of work, and area-to-area commuter flows. The first California version of the CTPP/SE was released March 1993.
  • CTPP/UE. Census Transportation Planning Package / Urban Element. This Package is also known as the "Journey-to-Work Package." The CTPP/UE dataset is a set of detailed tabulations designed by and created for metropolitan transportation planners. Data in the CTPP/SE is reported at the metro area, county, and neighborhood levels. Neighborhood level data is either at census tract or metropolitan area's travel analysis zone (TAZ) level. CTPP/UE files were created for all 284 US metropolitan areas. Data is provided for area of residence, area of work, and area-to-area commuter flows. The first version of the Bay Area CTPP/UE was released December 1993. The final version of the Bay Area CTPP/UE was released March 1995.
  • STP-214. The "Special Tape Product #214" was created especially for the MTC and Santa Clara County by the US Census Bureau. This unique dataset includes tabulations of block group-to-block group commuters, by means of transportation to work, by household income quartile. Interregional commuters between the Bay Area and surrounding counties is also included in this file. Data for neighboring counties is provided at census tract level. Data from this file is being used as the "observed" work trip database for the calibration and validation of MTC's new set of work trip destination choice models. The first version of the STP-214 was delivered to MTC in March 1995. Due to errors in the file, the STP-214 was redeveloped and reissued to MTC this past April 1996.
  • PUMS. Public Use Microdata Sample. The PUMS files provide detailed, disaggregate census records for approximately 108,000 Bay Area households and 292,000 Bay Area residents. This represents five percent of the total households and population in the Bay Area. Though not the subject of any MTC Working Paper or Electronic Publication, the PUMS databases are critical in MTC's transportation planning analysis efforts. The drawback to the PUMS data file is that data is not reported for geographic areas of less than 100,000 total population. These geographic areas area known as PUMAs (Public Use Microdata Areas). There are 48 PUMAs defined for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. The California PUMS file was released on CD on August 1993.
