1990 Census Data & Reports

This page highlights MTC publications and databases on the 1990 Census, available for downloading. MTC publications include Census Research Papers, Census Working Papers and Census Electronic Publications.

Explanation of contents of these working papers and census databases is included in an supplementary census datamart page.

A special 1990 Census database maintained at MTC is the Census Transportation Planning Package, or CTPP. This package is also known as the "journey-to-work package." The CTPP includes two major databases: a "statewide element" (SE) and an "urban element" (UE). We refer to these as the CTPP/SE and the CTPP/UE databases.

The CTPP/SE database includes information on all places (cities and unincorporated places) of 2,500 population or greater in the 50 states and District of Columbia. The CTPP/UE database includes census data at the travel analysis zone or census tract level for all 284 US metropolitan areas.

1990 Census Commuter Flow (1099 Zone System) by Income Quartile by Means of Transportation

These four data files represent zone-to-zone commuters by means of transportation to work by household income quartile. Be sure to download the readme.txt documentation file to get a handle on file format. Given the large size of these files (23.5 megabytes, unzipped) we would recommend using special statistical software or transportation network planning software to handle these files.
