Unsuspecting BART riders recently joined a “green mob” as part of a joint effort by BART, the Golden State Warriors basketball team, the car insurance company Esurance and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to encourage transit ridership.

The surprise event happened March 29, 2012, when Warriors Head Coach Mark Jackson, along with players Dorell Wright, Richard Jefferson and Dominic McGuire greeted BART riders at the Downtown Berkeley BART station. They distributed prepaid Clipper® cards – ranging in value from $5-$10 – and Green Mob t-shirts as encouragement to “Go Green” by riding public transportation.

The Warriors group then boarded a San Francisco-bound train and distributed more Clipper® cards and t-shirts to BART riders, ending the trip at the Embarcadero BART station. In keeping with the environmental theme, the group carpooled back to Oakland when the event was over.

Clipper® is the Bay Area’s regional transit fare card. Clipper® is now accepted on seven Bay Area transit systems:  BART, Muni, AC Transit, VTA, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, and SamTrans.
