EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR STEVE HEMINGER’S REPORT TO THE
COMMISSION MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 22, 2010

SUMMARY OF EVENTS:

SEDCORP Breakfast Forum
Fairfield, August 26

At the invitation of Commissioner Spering, I spoke before the Solano County Economic Development Corporation (SEDCORP) about the implementation of Senate Bill 375 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area.

CAPCOA Annual Meeting
San Francisco, August 30

I participated in a panel discussion about the implementation of Senate Bill 375 at the annual meeting of the California Pollution Control Officers Association (CAPCOA).

Obama Announces Transportation Plan
Milwaukee, September 6

President Obama used the occasion of a Labor Day speech to announce a new $50 billion transportation investment initiative that apparently is intended to serve as the foundation for his Administration’s still-unreleased proposal for a new authorization of the federal surface transportation program. As of this date, the only information available on the initiative is a two-page fact sheet on the White House website. We will keep the Commission posted as developments on a new authorization bill occur.

IBTTA Annual Meeting
San Diego, September 10-14

Andy Fremier and I participated in separate panel discussions at the annual meeting of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA). I also attended the regular IBTTA board of directors meeting. During the conference, the engineering firm HNTB released results of a national poll (PDF) regarding public attitudes about different methods of paying for infrastructure projects.

Bonnie Lowenthal Visit
Oakland, September 20

We hosted a visit by Assembly Member Bonnie Lowenthal, who chairs the Assembly Transportation Committee. We briefed Chair Lowenthal on various Bay Area transportation issues as well as arranged for her to tour the construction site for the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

New Partners

I am pleased to report the appointment of two new colleagues in the Bay Area transportation community: Ezra Rapport is the new executive director of ABAG and Art Dao has been appointed as the first executive director of the new Alameda County Transportation Commission. I look forward to working with both of them in the months and years ahead.

Map of the Month

The map of the month illustrates the existing Level II public vehicle charging station infrastructure in the nine county Bay Area region. The data was created by geocoding the address of the 91 charging stations, which was obtained from the U.S. Department of Energy.
