WHAT: The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) hosts a press briefing to announce distribution plans for $122 million in new federal/state money flowing to the Bay Area. The windfall will help accelerate highway construction projects, repair local streets and roads, meet transit rehabilitation needs, and improve safety and efficiency of the Bay Area transportation network. Included in the total is $15 million for “lifeline” transportation services for low-income residents across all nine Bay Area counties. Key projects slated to receive funding include environmental review and preliminary engineering for a suicide barrier for the Golden Gate Bridge (total cost for this phase is $2 million, of which MTC is supplying $1.6 million). Other big-ticket items include $8.5 million for systemwide track and related structure rehabilitation for Caltrain; $21 million to help close the carpool-lane gap along U.S. 101 in San Rafael; $17.5 million to widen Interstate 238 from Interstate 580 to Interstate 880 in Alameda County; and $7 million for BART’s core system rehabilitation.
