Press ReleasesFor Immediate ReleaseCommuters Urged to Plan Ahead in Event of Transit StrikeContact: Randy Rentschler, 510.817.5780 Oakland, Calif., June 23, 2005…With the possibility of BART trains and other transit vehicles coming to a halt on July 1 due to labor contracts that expire at midnight June 30, Bay Area transportation officials are urging commuters to review their contingency plans for getting to and from work. If there is a strike at BART or other transit agencies, an unusually large number of vehicles are expected to crowd onto already congested roadways. Commuters are advised to avoid the peak driving periods by traveling earlier or later than usual, taking an alternative transit service, or even working at home. In the event of a disruption to BART service, other transit providers may be able to adjust their services where possible. The Bay Area’s toll-free 511 traveler information system will act as a one-stop resource for information on service disruptions and adjustments. Commuters should visit <www.511.org>, or call 511 for the most up-to-date information on alternative transit and ridesharing options. The 511.org Web site offers a Ridematch Tool to help pair carpoolers, and an interactive map of carpool lanes and Park & Ride lots. 511 is a free call from any phone in the Bay Area. MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, and operates the region’s transit information Web page and transportation information phone number. # # #
