OAKLAND, Calif., March 13, 2006 . . . As part of its continuing effort to stitch together the Bay Area’s nearly two dozen transit systems into a seamless, passenger-friendly network, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is inviting residents throughout the nine-county region to weigh in on its newly released Draft Transit Connectivity Plan.
The Draft Transit Connectivity Plan details a comprehensive strategy for easing passengers’ movement from one transit system to another by providing more reliable connections, making it easier to pay fares, improving way-finding signage and reducing overall travel times. By making multi-operator transit trips easier and more convenient, good connectivity can help attract new transit riders — and retain existing riders. Poor connectivity, on the other hand, can make transit unattractive to new customers by rendering travel frustrating, time-consuming and costly.
The Draft Plan highlights connectivity improvements at 21 regional transit hubs around the Bay Area, and identifies six specific focus areas:
- way-finding signage;
- transit information;
- real-time technology;
- schedule coordination;
- fare coordination; and
- last-mile connecting services.
The Draft Transit Connectivity Plan can be viewed
online and downloaded in pdf format from the MTC Web site.
Copies of the draft plan also are available for public review
at the MTC Library at 101 Eighth Street in Oakland, and at
major public libraries in each of the nine Bay Area counties.
You may request a copy from the MTC Library by e-mail at library@mtc.ca.gov, or by phone at 510.817.5836.
Comments on the draft plan must be received by MTC no later than 4 p.m., Friday, April 14, 2006. Written comments may be submitted to MTC’s Public Information Office at 101 Eighth Street,
Oakland, CA 94607; faxed to MTC at 510.817.5848; or sent via e-mail to info@mtc.ca.gov. After considering public comment, the Commission is scheduled to adopt a final Transit Connectivity Plan
at its April 26, 2006 meeting. For more information, please contact the MTC Public Information Office at 510.817.5757.
