May 1st kicks off the beginning of National Bike Month, and here in the San Francisco Bay Area, many are gearing up for the region’s 12th annual Bike to Work Day, a celebration set for Thursday, May 18 that promotes bicycling as a healthy, fun, and viable form of transportation. With gas prices at an all time high and expected to creep even higher during the summer, many Bay Area residents are looking to bicycling as an alternative form of transportation. Cole Portocarrero, the event coordinator for Bike to Work Day says, “In addition to creating a healthy lifestyle and providing a way to get outdoors, bike commuting saves money.” Event organizers are emphasizing several Bay Area activities:

It will save you money, and you might even lose a few pounds! The San Francisco Bay Area’s Bike to Work Day 2006 promotions are being organized by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition, county congestion management agencies, county bicycle coalitions, and hundreds of local volunteers. ###
