New Bay Area Transit Guide Available Now!

Covers Buses, Trains, Ferries & More in Nine Counties

OAKLAND, Calif., May 5, 2006. . . A new edition of the 511 Getting There on Transit guide, a free pocket guide to riding public transit in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been released by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). This handy booklet provides colorful maps and diagrams of more than three dozen transit systems throughout the region, as well as lists of popular destinations and directions to reach them on transit. For anyone – visitor or local – seeking an alternative to paying escalating gas prices and driving on the Bay Area’s busy streets and highways, Getting There is the way to go.

Getting There on Transit is part of MTC’s 511 Traveler Information program, the Bay Area’s 24-hour, one-stop source for free traffic, transit, rideshare and bicycling information accessed by phone (5-1-1) or on the web (511.org). Getting There provides the “lay of the land” and orients travelers to the region’s diverse transit modes, routes and agencies so that they can more effectively plot their transit trips using the 511 system, by dialing 5-1-1 or on the web at 511.org. The guide even includes “tips and tricks” for callers using the 511 phone system.

In addition to a colorful overview map of regional transit, Getting There provides a directory of paratransit van and taxi services for disabled and elderly passengers, a guide to airport ground transportation, a diagram of Bay Area rail systems and their interconnections, and close-up views of downtown Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and other key cities. It also includes transit directions to more than 250 popular destinations.

“Whether you’re a newcomer to the region, a tourist or a weekend explorer, you’ll find everything you need to get around the nine Bay Area counties by bus, train, trolley, cable car and ferry in one handy guide,” said Melanie Crotty, MTC director of Traveler Coordination and Information.

To obtain your free copy of the 511 Getting There on Transit guide, send an e-mail with your name and address to library@mtc.ca.gov or fax 510.817.5848 or call 510.817.5836. Bay Area transit operators also distribute copies of the guide.
