MTC to Honor Bay Area's Bike Commuters of the Year and the Team Bike Challenge Winners

Who: Honoring Bike Commuter of the Year recipients in each county, and winners of the month-long Team Bike Challenge: Team PSYCHE, Marin County; and Bicycling on Roads and Trails, Santa Clara County

What: Awards Ceremony & Luncheon

When: Friday, June 8, 2007 12:30-1:30PM.

Where: Metropolitan Transportation Commission, MetroCenter Auditorium, 101 Eighth Street, Oakland

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) will host an awards ceremony in recognition of the Bike Commuter of the Year recipients from each of the nine Bay Area Counties. Also on the list of honorees are the members from Team PSYCHE of Marin County and Bicycling on Roads and Trails of Santa Clara County, who tied in their attempt to win the month-long Team Bike Challenge competition. The top teams in the other seven Bay Area counties also will be recognized.

MTC Executive Director Steve Heminger will open the ceremony and MTC Commissioner Ken Yeager of Santa Clara County (who participated in Team Bike Challenge) will serve as master of ceremonies.

The Bike Commuter of the Year Award honors a resident from each of the nine Bay Area counties who is committed to making every day a “Bike to Work Day.” The winners epitomize and actualize the health, environmental, social and economic benefits of bicycling.

Launched by MTC and the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition in 2006, the Team Bike Challenge is a month-long competition occurring in May (National Bike Month) that encourages participants to use their bicycles as much as possible for transportation purposes in exchange for points. The winning teams win the honor of placing a bike rack in a public location of choice.

The Bike Commuter of the Year Awards and the Team Bike Challenge are special campaigns designed to encourage bicycling as part of the Bike to Work Day promotional efforts.
