OAKLAND, Calif., June 13, 2007 . . . This week, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) named Alix Bockelman, director of Programming and Allocations for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), as its Woman of the Year. The influential national organization recognized Ms. Bockelman for her leadership in the industry as well as for her professionalism, commitment to customer service and continuing support for advancing women’s careers in the transportation field. Ms. Bockelman was cited for her work earlier this year spearheading the successful regional effort to secure funding for Bay Area projects through the Corridor Mobility Improvement Account established by Proposition 1B, which was approved by voters in November 2006.

As MTC’s Programming and Allocations director, Ms. Bockelman oversees more than $1 billion in regional, state and federal transportation funding each year. She joined MTC in July 1998, and has worked as a project manager, funding liaison and multimodal program manager. Ms. Bockelman also has prepared financial forecasts for transportation plans, analyzed the impact of proposed legislation on Bay Area transportation and worked to advance MTC’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C.

“We’re really proud of Alix, and pleased not only that her great work to improve Bay Area mobility is recognized but that she is viewed as a role model for women in the transportation field,” said Therese McMillan, MTC’s Deputy Executive for Policy.

Prior to joining MTC, Ms. Bockelman held research positions with the Office of Management and Budget and with the Environmental and Energy Study Institute in Washington, D.C., and engineering positions with the East Bay Municipal Utilities District and Radian International. Ms. Bockelman holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a registered Professional Engineer in California.

MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
