OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 30, 1998 . . . Bay Area residents who live in the newly-designated 650 area code will have to add an area code when dialing 817-1717 for traveler information.

Starting Sunday, February 1, travelers calling from the new 650 area code will have to dial 415-817-1717 or 408-817-1717 in order to reach TravInfo, the Bay Area's advanced traveler information system. TravInfoTM -- available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays -- is a free public service that provides a single source for up-to-the-minute traffic reports for all Bay Area highways; direct telephone connections to public transit and paratransit operators; carpooling information; construction updates on major Caltrans projects; as well as street closures due to flooding in rainy weather and other travel-related information. Local toll charges may apply.

In the region's four other area codes (408, 415, 510 and 707), residents can reach TravInfoTM by simply dialing 817-1717 -- no area code required. For 650 area-code residents, MTC hopes to restore the ability to reach TravInfo without dialing an area code soon.

Starting this Sunday, Peninsula residents in the 650 area code are reminded to dial in to TravInfoTM at 415-817-1717 or 408-817-1717. TravInfo is sponsored throughout the nine-county Bay Area by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
