Oakland, CA, Sept. 28, 1998...Representatives of the Bay Area's three major airports, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and airlines, as well as aviation noise consultants, have been invited to a workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to discuss issues related to the noise generated by airplanes as they fly over the Bay Area on their way into and out of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose International airports.

Topics expected to be covered in the forum include background information on noise generation, trends in aircraft noise levels and control, airline operational concerns, air traffic control procedures, and new systems for tracing and evaluating aircraft noise.

The forum, which begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to last four hours, will be held in the MetroCenter Auditorium, 101 Eighth Street, Oakland. It is sponsored by the Regional Airport Planning Committee (RAPC), a joint advisory group of the Association of Bay Area Governments and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).

The chair of RAPC - Oakland mayor and MTC commissioner, Elihu Harris - will kick off the session, followed by an introductory presentation by Walter Gillfillan of Walter Gillfillan & Associates, the internationally renowned aviation consulting firm. A panel composed of locally elected officials, Bay Area FAA personnel, local airport noise abatement officers, and representatives of the Caltrans Aeronautics Division in Sacramento and the Air Transport Association will discuss their individual organizationsÕ responsibilities in mitigating aircraft noise.

MTC is the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county Bay Area.
