James T. Beall Jr. (pronounced "Bell") was elected chair of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) yesterday by his fellow commissioners at a regularly scheduled meeting of the MTC. Elected to serve as vice chair of the 19-member policy board was Sharon Brown, a councilmember for the city of San Pablo. Each will serve a two-year term.

Beall was appointed to MTC in 1987 and has served as chair of several committees and as commission vice chair since 1997. He represents the county of Santa Clara on the commission. Beall has served as a county supervisor since 1994; prior to that he was a San Jose councilmember for 14 years. He brings strong transportation planning credentials to the MTC assignment, having served as chair of the Santa Clara County Traffic Authority, and a member of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, the county Paratransit Coordinating Council, and the Santa Clara County Congestion Management Agency. He also is former chair of the National League of Cities' Transportation and Communications Steering Committee. Beall currently is co-chair of the county's Traffic Safe Communities Network and is the county's alternate appointee to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

Sharon Brown becomes vice chair after serving six years as an MTC commissioner. As a San Pablo councilmember, she represents the cities of Contra Costa County on MTC. She is a former mayor of San Pablo and is past president of the National Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations.

MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
