OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 29, 1999 . . . The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has a vacancy on its Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee for one disabled resident of Santa Clara County.

The Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee meets bimonthly to advise MTC on actions related to transportation for elderly persons and people with disabilities, including access to transportation services and implementation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The 21-member panel – with members from the nine Bay Area counties – reviews MTC policies for the programming and allocation of funds for transportation services, reviews proposed MTC positions on relevant legislation, and provides comment on state and federal statutes affecting transportation services for the elderly and disabled.

No specific educational requirements are required of committee members, just an interest in transportation issues affecting elderly and disabled persons. While positions are voluntary, committee members receive a $50 stipend and travel expenses for their attendance at the bimonthly meetings, held at MTC's offices in Oakland on the third Thursday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Applications will be reviewed and committee members selected by MTC's governing board of commissioners. Interested applicants are encouraged to request a nomination form [available in accessible formats] from Jacob Avidon, MTC staff liaison to the committee, at 510/817-3271; TDD 510/817-3298; e-mail at <javidon@mtc.ca.gov> or via mail at MTC, 101 8th Street, Oakland, CA 94607. The position is open until filled.

MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
