OAKLAND, Calif., April 20, 2000 . . . The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has extended its deadline to May 10 for submittal of applications from high school students wishing to participate in an important new educational opportunity — a High School Internship Program. The program will provide students who have completed the 10th, 11th or 12th grade by this June work experience in the field of transportation.

"The purpose of the program is to introduce students to potential careers, and to provide our transportation partners with some assistance on entry-level tasks," noted MTC Executive Director Lawrence D. Dahms. One of MTC's citizen advisory panels, the Minority Citizens Advisory Committee, provided guidance in the design of the program, and will assist with recruitment of high school students.

Approximately 40 paid internships ($6 per hour) are available throughout the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. Ideally, students will live in the same city or county in which they work. Selected students will be employed for a period of two months in the summer with local public agencies in a department related to transportation planning, public works or public transit. Student applicants must be at least 16 years of age, have completed at least the tenth grade by the start of the program, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

Applications can be downloaded from MTC's Web site, located at <www.mtc.ca.gov>. (See "Jobs/Contracts" on the navigational bar.) The Web site also includes a complete list of internship locations for this summer. To request a hard copy of the application packet, contact MTC's Public Information Office at 510/817-5757, or e-mail MTC at <info@mtc.ca.gov>.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, May 10, 2000. MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
