OAKLAND, Calif., June 22, 2000 . . . Do you know a person or organization who has helped people get around in the Bay Area this year? The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) urges you to recommend these shining transportation stars for an award.

As the regional transportation agency for the nine-county San Francisco region, MTC, through its annual awards program, recognizes individuals, programs, and organizations that have come up with new and better ways to help people get where they're going. Consider nominating:

  • transportation employees who go above and beyond the call of duty;
  • innovations that improve the transportation network and keep it moving;
  • efforts to inform or educate the public about transportation issues;
  • programs that improve transit services;
  • successful efforts that encourage alternatives to driving alone;
  • members of the media who do an excellent job reporting transportation issues.

Nominations are also needed for four special awards that are also part of the program. A Special Transportation Employee Award recognizes an employee that does an exceptional job; the Doris W. Kahn Accessible Transportation Award honors a person or organization whose efforts have resulted in significant improvement in transportation services for the elderly or persons with disabilities; the John F. Foran Legislative Award honors a state or federal legislator whose work has had a positive effect on transportation; and the Greta Ericson Distinguished Service Award recognizes long-term, quality leadership in the transportation profession.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, July 14, 2000. Winners will be selected by a jury representing MTC, the media, the business and environmental communities, and citizens. The 24th Annual Awards ceremony will be held in October. For an application form or to submit your nomination online, visit the MTC Web page at <www.mtc.ca.gov>. For additional information, call the MTC public information office at 510.817.5757.
