OAKLAND, Calif., November 17, 2000... Thanksgiving travelers can call 817-1717 for updates on parking space availability at the three major Bay Area airports Tuesday, Nov. 21 through Thursday, Nov. 23. Travelers also can talk to operators about public transit and shuttles to the airports.

Traffic/Parking: Call 817-1717 (TTY: 817-1718) and select option "2" for up-to-the-minute traffic reports on any route to the San Francisco, Oakland or San Jose international airports and find out the percentage of parking spaces still available at airport lots.

Public Transit: Callers can also select option "1" to be connected to any Bay Area public transit agency that serves the airports.

Shuttles/Other Ground Transportation: Airport officials encourage travelers to leave their vehicles at home and instead take a door-to-door van, bus, taxi or limo to the airport to beat the traffic and the parking crunch. By calling 817-1717 and selecting option "5," travelers can receive personalized assistance on ground transportation services to San Francisco International Airport.

The 817-1717 service covers the nine-county Bay Area. No area code is needed to call 817-1717 in all six regional area codes (415, 650, 408, 510, 925 and 707). The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Data about parking spaces comes directly from airport officials.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the California Highway Patrol, and Caltrans oversee the 817-1717 service in coordination with private companies and other public agencies.
