OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 4, 2000...The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has vacancies on two citizen advisory committees for residents of Sonoma County. MTC, the regional transportation planning and financing agency in the nine-county Bay Area, is seeking one disabled representative from Sonoma County for its Elderly & Disabled Advisory Committee; as well as Latino, Asian or African-American residents to fill two vacancies on its Minority Citizens Advisory Committee.

The Elderly & Disabled Advisory Committee advises MTC regarding issues of concern to the elderly and to persons with disabilities, such as access to transportation services and implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The committee meets in Oakland once every other month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

The purpose of the Minority Citizens Advisory Committee (MCAC) is to involve minority communities in the region's transportation planning process, and to ensure that the views and needs of minority communities are adequately reflected in MTC policies. The committee meets monthly, the third Tuesday of the month, at 3:30 p.m. in Oakland.

No specific educational requirements are required, just an interest in transportation and how it affects our communities. While positions are voluntary, committee members do receive a $50 stipend and travel expenses for attending their respective committee meeting.

Committee members are selected by MTC's governing board of commissioners. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of intent or resume by Jan. 12, or until the positions are filled, to Catalina Alvarado, Public Information Officer, at MTC, 101 8th Street, Oakland, CA 94607. For more information or for an application packet, contact Alvarado at 510.817.5783.
