Richmond Parkway Call Box Unveiling and Demonstration

Who: City of Richmond and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) Service
Authority for Freeways and Expressways (SAFE)
What: Unveiling and demonstration of the first of 14 brand-new roadside call boxes installed
along the Richmond Parkway (event will take place rain or shine)
When: Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at 10:30 a.m.
Where: Richmond Parkway, at the corner of Barrett Ave. and Garrard Blvd. (see directions
below)
Why: To provide safety for motorists who might be stranded along the Richmond Parkway -- a
seven-mile stretch of roadway without gas stations or other businesses

The call boxes are part of a network of approximately 3,500 bright yellow call boxes operated and
administered by the SAFE, which is overseen by commissioners of MTC, the regional transportation
planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
Note to media: Following the ceremony and refreshments, reporters are invited to
observe the operations of the City of Richmond Police Department's new state-of-the-art Communications
Center where call box calls are received. The center is located at 326 - 7th Street -- from the corner
of Barrett and Garrard, go east on Barrett to 27th Street, and turn right. The center is on the left,
one and a half blocks up.
Directions for 10:30 a.m. event: From San Francisco/Oakland, take the
Macdonald Ave. exit from I-80 westbound to 27th Street; turn right on 27th; two blocks later turn left
onto Barrett Ave. Follow Barrett to its end. From Sacramento, take the San Pablo exit from I-80, and
veer right onto Barrett Ave. Follow Barrett to its end.
