OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 8, 2001...The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC),
the Bay Area's transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency, is asking the public to
comment on how well it communicates with Bay Area residents and involves them in transportation
planning.
The MTC Legislation Committee will hold a public forum Friday, Jan. 12, on two reports that evaluate
the agency's entire public involvement process. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Joseph P. Bort
MetroCenter, 101 Eighth Street, Oakland (across from the Lake Merritt BART station).
One report, by a consultant, assesses MTC's current public involvement procedures, including those
relating to Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. A second report, by MTC staff, evaluates the
agency's public information materials.
Copies of both draft reports are available upon request by calling 510.817.5836. The internal staff
report and two chapters of the consultant's report — the executive summary and summary of
recommendations —also are posted on the MTC Web site: <www.mtc.ca.gov>.
In addition to speaking at the Legislation Committee meeting on Friday, the public may comment on the
reports in writing to MTC (101 Eighth Street, Oakland, CA 94607), by fax (510.817.5848) and via an
on-line form posted on the MTC Web site.
The Commission will incorporate recommendations from both final reports into an updated plan for MTC
public involvement procedures that will be adopted in February.
