OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 28, 2001...The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) will hold an open house on Thursday, March 1, 2001, to launch the development of a Regional Bicycle Master Plan for the San Francisco Bay Area. The open house will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Lawrence D. Dahms Auditorium at the Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter, 101 Eighth Street, in Oakland.

The open house will serve as the kickoff event for the seven-month study and provide members of the public an opportunity to express their concerns and interests regarding bicycle planning issues. Also, MTC will introduce representatives of Alta Transportation Consulting, the firm that has been retained to assist with the development of the bicycle plan.

The Regional Bicycle Master Plan will study current bicycling conditions in the nine-county Bay region and propose actions to create a safer and more enjoyable cycling environment for the future. The plan will address regional policies, connections with other modes of transportation, and model ordinances. Other goals of the plan call for the development of a safety index to identify areas with high rates of bicycle accidents, the production of a regional bicycle map and the creation of a project-evaluation system. The plan is also intended to set a framework for prioritizing bicycle projects for possible inclusion in MTC's broader Regional Transportation Plan, which is being updated in 2001.

MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county Bay Area.
