OAKLAND, Calif., April 3, 2001...The future of transportation in Alameda County and the Bay Area will be open for discussion at two public workshops next week. One will be held Tuesday, April 10, at the Pleasanton Library, 400 Old Bernal Avenue in Pleasanton, and the other will take place Thursday, April 12, at the Hayward City Hall, 777 B Street. Both events are scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The workshops are sponsored by the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and will focus on both the Countywide Transportation Plan and the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan.

The countywide plan consists of projects, programs and policies needed to provide a balanced transportation system in Alameda County over the next 25 years. The county's plan will influence the Regional Transportation Plan, being developed for the nine-county Bay Area by MTC. The regional plan will determine how billions of federal, state and regional tax dollars should be spent over the next 25 years to manage, maintain and improve the Bay Area transportation network. The network includes transit systems, highways, airports, seaports, railroads, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

"Transportation touches the lives of every one of us in one way or another," said Scott Haggerty, President of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and an MTC Commissioner, "whether it be regarding decisions on new roads, transit routes, or related issues such as land use, air quality and social equity."

"The Congestion Management Agency and MTC are making a concerted effort to solicit public opinion on upcoming decisions for the Countywide Plan and the Regional Transportation Plan, and we want to hear from as many Bay Area residents as possible in the months ahead," Haggerty added.

The workshops will feature interactive graphic displays that illustrate transportation issues and that invite participants to express their views on proposed transportation projects in Alameda County as well as on regional issues, such as how the transportation system affects the economy, the environment and social equity. A moderated public discussion will follow on choices and tradeoffs the county and region must make in deciding how to invest transportation dollars.

For more information, including directions to the workshops, contact the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency at 510.836.2560. For information on the Regional Transportation Plan, contact MTC at 510.817.5757, by e-mail to <info@mtc.ca.gov>, or visit the MTC Web site at www.mtc.ca.gov.

MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. The Alameda County Congestion Management Agency is the local transportation planning agency for Alameda County.
