OAKLAND, Calif., April 13, 2001...Elderly and disabled Bay Area residents will focus on their transportation needs at a special workshop Thursday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter auditorium, 101 Eighth Street, in Oakland. The event is sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the MTC Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee.

The workshop will focus on the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan, a multi-billion dollar plan being developed by MTC that will determine how federal, state and regional transportation dollars are spent in the Bay Area for the next 25 years. MTC expects approximately $13 billion to be available for new projects or services throughout the region between now and 2026.

"The stakes are high, and now is the time for people to speak up," said August Longo, chair of the MTC Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee. "As our population ages, issues of access and mobility for senior citizens will take on more and more prominence."

In the interactive workshop, participants will record their comments and opinions on various transportation issues and take part in an open discussion. For more information on the workshop, call Jake Avidon at 510.817.5765.

MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
