OAKLAND, Calif., April 18, 2001...The future of transportation in Sonoma County and the Bay Area
will be featured at a public workshop in Santa Rosa. The event will be held Monday, April 30, at 6
p.m., in the Sonoma County Permit and Resource Management Department, Planning Commission Hearing Room,
2550 Ventura Avenue in Santa Rosa.
The workshop is co-sponsored by the Sonoma County Transportation Authority's Citizens' Advisory
Committee and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and will focus on the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). Each county's
transportation priorities will influence the RTP, which is being developed for the Bay Area by MTC. The
RTP will specify how billions of federal, state and regional tax dollars should be spent over the next
25 years to manage, maintain and improve the Bay Area transportation network. The network includes
transit systems, highways, airports, seaports, railroads, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
"The Bay Area faces tough choices on how to allocate regional transportation dollars over the next 25
years. I hope this meeting will stimulate citizen interest and participation in the development of the
Regional Transportation Plan," said Sharon Wright, Santa Rosa City Council member and an MTC
Commissioner.
The workshop will feature interactive graphic displays that illustrate transportation issues and that
invite participants to express their views on proposed transportation projects, including how the
transportation system affects the economy, the environment and social equity. A discussion will follow
on choices and tradeoffs the county and region must make in deciding how to invest transportation
dollars.
For more information about the public workshop or the Regional Transportation Plan, contact the Sonoma
County Transportation Authority at 707.565.5373, or MTC at 510.817.5757.
MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco
Bay Area. The Sonoma County Transportation Authority is the local transportation planning agency for
Sonoma County.
