OAKLAND, Calif., April 26, 2001...The future of transportation in San Jose and the Bay Area will be discussed at two community workshops in San Jose:

  • Wednesday, May 2, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Foothill Intermediate School Auditorium, 1966 Flint Ave., East San Jose
  • Thursday, May 10, 6:30 -8:30 p.m., Luther Burbank School Cafeteria, 4 Wabash Ave. (off West San Carlos Street) in San Jose.

The workshops will focus on the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), which will identify how billions of federal, state and regional tax dollars should be spent over the next 25 years to manage, maintain and improve the Bay Area transportation network.

The interactive workshops, featuring graphic displays on transportation issues, will invite participants to express their views on topics such as traffic congestion and how transportation affects the economy, the environment and social equity. A discussion will follow on the tough choices and tradeoffs the region must make in deciding how to invest transportation dollars.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is cosponsoring the workshops with the San Jose/Santa Clara County Chapter of the League of Women Voters on May 2 and with the United Neighborhoods Association of Santa Clara County on May 10.

"I hope as many San Jose residents as possible attend these meetings and voice their ideas and concerns about our transportation issues," said Santa Clara County Supervisor and MTC Commissioner Jim Beall.

For more information about the workshops or the Regional Transportation Plan, call MTC at 510.817.5757 or email: info@mtc.ca.gov. Can't make the meeting? Take part in the interactive workshop on MTC's Web site, at www.mtc.ca.gov/planning/rtp/survey.htm.

MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
