OAKLAND, Calif., April 30, 2001...Are you concerned about traffic and its effect on our community,
economy, and environment? The future of transportation in Solano County and the Bay Area will be the
subject of a public workshop sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) on
Wednesday, May 16th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Federation of Latin
American Descendants (FELAD) Resource Center, 420 Virginia Street (between Sonoma Boulevard and Marin
Street), Vallejo.
The meeting is being co-sponsored by MTC and FELAD, the Vallejo Inter-tribal Council, Filipino-American
Social Services, and the Continental of Omega Boys and Girls Club. Refreshments will be served.
The RTP will be adopted in November 2001. Each county's transportation priorities will influence the
RTP and how billions of federal, state, and regional tax dollars should be spent over the next 25 years
to manage, maintain, and improve the Bay Area transportation network. The network includes transit
systems, highways, airports, seaports, railroads, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
Interactive graphic displays will be used to illustrate transportation issues and to invite
participants to express their views on proposed transportation projects, as well as on how the
transportation system affects the economy, the environment, and social equity. An open discussion will
follow.
Tranquilino Martinez, a representative on the Minority Citizens Advisory Committee to MTC for Solano
County, said, "This is an excellent opportunity for Latinos, Native Americans, Filipinos, African
Americans and others to offer their perspectives on how transportation dollars should be invested in
the coming decades. Whether you are concerned with improving your local bus services, reducing
congestion on Bay Area roads, or eliminating potholes from local streets, now is the time to speak up."
MTC, the transportation planning, coordinating, and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco
Bay Area, is sponsoring the workshop in a special effort to work with community organizations and a
range of interest groups to ensure broad public participation in developing the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP).
