OAKLAND, Calif., April 30, 2001...The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) will hold a
workshop on Thursday, May 3, 2001, to solicit public input on the development of a Regional Bicycle
Master Plan for the San Francisco Bay Area. The workshop will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 201, San
Francisco City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, in San Francisco.
The workshop will focus on the first phase of MTC's bike plan study, with emphasis on developing
regional goals and objectives, proposed evaluation criteria for establishing a regional bicycle network
and candidate projects for inclusion.
"The Regional Bicycle Master Plan is an important step toward making bicycling a safer, more convenient
and more viable transportation alternative for the future," says MTC planner and bike plan project
manager Trent Lethco. The plan will study current bicycling conditions and propose actions to improve
the cycling environment in the nine-county Bay region. Also, the plan will address regional policies
and connections with other modes of transportation, and will recommend future directions for bicycle
programs in the region. Other goals of the plan call for the development of a safety index to identify
areas with high rates of bicycle accidents, the production of a regional bicycle map and the creation
of a project-evaluation system.
Secured bicycle parking will be available at the meeting location.
MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county Bay Area.
