OAKLAND, Calif., May 2, 2001...How easy is it for you to travel to work, to health care, to school,
to shops and recreational facilities? Are you concerned about transportation and its effect on our
community, economy, and environment? The future of transportation in West County and the Bay Area will
be the subject of a public workshop sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) on
Tuesday, May 8, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Senior/Multicultural Center at
515 Silver Avenue in North Richmond.
The meeting is being co-sponsored by MTC and the Neighborhood House of North Richmond. Refreshments
will be served.
The focus of the meeting is on MTC's Regional
Transportation Plan (RTP), slated for adoption in November 2001. Each of the nine Bay Area
counties' transportation priorities will influence the RTP and how billions of federal, state, and
regional tax dollars should be spent over the next 25 years to manage, maintain, and improve the Bay
Area transportation network.
The workshop will feature interactive graphic displays illustrating transportation issues. Participants
are invited to comment on how the transportation system affects the community, the economy, and the
environment. An open discussion will follow.
Whitney Dotson, deputy director for Neighborhood House of North Richmond, said, "This workshop will
provide our community the opportunity to shape the various transportation resources in the Bay Area,
which include transit systems, highways, airports, seaports, railroads, and bicycle and pedestrian
facilities."
MTC, the transportation planning, coordinating, and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco
Bay Area, is sponsoring the workshop in a special effort to work with community organizations and a
range of interest groups to ensure broad public participation in developing the 2001 Regional
Transportation Plan.
