OAKLAND, Calif., May 16, 2001...How easy is it for you to travel to work, to health care, to school, to shops and recreational facilities? Are you concerned about transportation and its effect on our community, economy, and environment? The future of transportation in the Bay Area will be the subject of a public workshop sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) on Friday, May 18, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The workshop will be held in the Community Room of Bayside Elderly Housing at 777 Broadway, in San Francisco.

The meeting is being co-sponsored by MTC and the Chinatown Community Development Center/Chinatown TRIP (Transportation Research and Improvement Project). Refreshments will be served.

The focus of the meeting is on MTC's Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), slated for adoption in November 2001. Each of the nine Bay Area counties' transportation priorities will influence the RTP and how billions of federal, state, and regional tax dollars should be spent over the next 25 years to manage, maintain, and improve the Bay Area transportation network.

The workshop will feature interactive graphic displays illustrating transportation issues. Participants are invited to comment on how the transportation system affects the community, the economy, and the environment. An open discussion will follow.

MTC, the transportation planning, coordinating, and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, is sponsoring the workshop in a special effort to work with community organizations and a range of interest groups to ensure broad public participation in developing the 2001 Regional Transportation Plan.

For more information about the public workshop or the Regional Transportation Plan, contact the Chinatown Community Development Center, at 415.984.1497, or telephone MTC at 510.817.5757, e-mail at info@mtc.ca.gov.
