OAKLAND, Calif., June 21, 2002...Do you know a person or organization who has made
an extraordinary contribution to the way people get around in the Bay Area? The Metropolitan
Transportation Commission (MTC) urges you to recommend them for an award.
As the regional transportation planning agency for the nine-county San Francisco region, MTC’s awards program recognizes individuals, projects and
organizations that develop new and better ways to help people get where they’re going each day.
With this year’s theme of "Excellence in Motion," MTC is seeking to honor:
o innovative activities that make more efficient use of the transportation network;
o significant efforts to inform and educate the public about transportation issues;
o programs and organizations that improve transit service;
o efforts to boost smart growth;
o successful efforts to promote the use of alternatives to driving alone.
The public also is encouraged to submit nominations for four special awards that are part of
MTC’s awards program. The Doris W. Kahn Accessible Transportation Award honors a person or
organization whose efforts have resulted in significant improvement in transportation services for the
elderly or persons with disabilities. The John F. Foran Legislative Award honors a state or federal
legislator whose work has had a positive effect on transportation. The Greta Ericson Distinguished
Service Award recognizes long-term, quality leadership in the transportation profession. The Special
Employee Award was recently named in honor of David Tannehill, a longtime MTC planner who passed away
in late 2001. The Tannehill Award is intended for a transportation employee who goes beyond the call of
duty.
The deadline for nominations is Friday, July 12, 2002. Winners will be selected by a jury representing
MTC, the media, business and environmental communities, and citizens. For an application form, visit
the MTC Web page at www.mtc.ca.gov, or call the MTC Public
Information Office at 510.817.5757.
