What: BART, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and City CarShare will host a joint news conference to announce a multi-agency partnership to bring car-sharing to three BART stations: Rockridge and Lake Merritt in Oakland, and Glen Park in San Francisco. BART riders arriving at those stations now will be able to take a City CarShare car to reach their final destination. At the same time, MTC demonstrates its continuing support of City CarShare by joining as a business member.

When: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at 9:15 a.m.

Where: Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter, 101 Eighth Street at Oak Street (across from the Lake Merritt BART station) in Oakland.

Who: Supervisor Scott Haggerty, MTC Commissioner & President of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors; Oakland City Councilmember Danny Wan, District 2; Katherine Strehl, BART Executive Manager of External Affairs; and members of City CarShare.

Media Visuals: One green Volkswagen Beetle and one silver Volkswagen Jetta from City CarShare’s fleet, decaled with its logo. Agency officials and CarShare members also will be available for photo-ops.

Background: Drivers who join City CarShare can reserve the cars by the hour at a very reasonable cost for errands, shopping trips, business meetings and the like. Earlier this year the BART Board of Directors approved a one-year pilot program with City CarShare to provide car-sharing at two BART stations — Rockridge and Glen Park. Starting this week, City CarShare will expand its program by placing two car-share vehicles (one Volkswagen Beetle and one Volkswagen Jetta station wagon) at each of these stations. At the same time, City CarShare will place two vehicles (a Beetle and a Jetta) immediately in front of the Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter at 101 Eighth Street in Oakland; the MetroCenter houses MTC’s offices and is across the street from the Lake Merritt BART station. The City CarShare vehicles at the Lake Merritt BART station will be available to MTC employees as well as to all members of City CarShare.

City CarShare is currently operating in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Palo Alto with a total of 64 cars and over 1,600 members. In addition, some 50 employers have joined as business members. While the new Glen Park and Rockridge facilities are the first to be located within a BART parking lot, City CarShare had previously established locations in close proximity to nine other BART stations. The new location across from the Lake Merritt BART station brings the total number of BART stations served to twelve.
