WHY: To recognize individuals and organizations who have made significant
contributions to transportation in the Bay Area
(Members of the public are welcome.)
WHO: Winners to be recognized include Michael T. Burns of the San Francisco Municipal
Transportation Agency for his efforts to turn around San Francisco’s ailing transit system; a
couple who successfully lobbied to speed construction of safety improvements to a dangerous stretch of
Bay Area roadway after their daughter was killed; a trio of journalists for their coverage of
construction delays and escalating costs associated with retrofit of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay
Bridge; a trend-setting transportation agency that uses a team of ambassadors to help the public
navigate the transportation system; two communities – in San Francisco’s and
Oakland’s Chinatowns – who organized to make streets safer for pedestrians; a citizen
advocacy group working to make sure the needs of older adults are considered in the transportation
arena; and an innovative real estate development along a transit line. Also to be honored is State Sen.
Tom Torlakson for his efforts to promote transportation and better integration of land use decisions
and transportation investments.
