OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 30, 2002...San Leandro Mayor Shelia Young has been named by
the Alameda County Mayors Conference to represent the cities of Alameda County on the 19-member
Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), filling a vacancy that was created by the September death
of Alameda Mayor Ralph Appezzato. Commissioner Young will serve the remainder of a four-year term that
expires in 2003.
"I am honored to be appointed by my fellow mayors to serve on MTC," said Young. "I look forward to
working with the other commissioners and with MTC staff to improve mobility for residents throughout
the Bay Area, while maintaining our high quality of life and bolstering the strength of the regional
economy."
Young has served as mayor of San Leandro since 1998. She was elected to the San Leandro City Council in
1996 while serving on the city’s Board of Zoning Adjustments. In addition to her new position as
an MTC commissioner, Young serves as the chair of both the Alameda County Transportation Authority and
the Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority, and is a representative to the Bay Area Air
Quality Management District and the Association of Bay Area Governments. She also represents San
Leandro on the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency, the Alameda County Waste Management
Authority, the Alameda County Mayors Conference, and several other East Bay organizations.
In 2001, Young was elected to the Advisory Board of the United States Conference of Mayors. Young also
serves as a regular committee member on the Transportation and Communications Committee of the U.S.
Conference of Mayors, and earlier this year was elected chair of the Women Mayors’ Caucus.
Commissioner Young has lived in San Leandro for more than 25 years and has been a resident of the Bay
Area since 1967. She founded a successful paralegal/stenographic business in the East Bay in 1973 and
sold it when she became mayor of San Leandro in 1998.
MTC is the transportation planning, coordinating and financing agency for the nine-county San Francisco
Bay Area.
