Bay Area Transportation Leaders Launch One-Stop Source for
Traveler Information
Traffic, Transit and Carpooling Information Available on California's First 511
System

WHAT:
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is hosting a press conference to launch
the Bay Area's new traveler information service – 511 – providing
up-to-the-minute, on demand information for transit riders, drivers, carpoolers, vanpoolers
and bicyclists throughout the Bay Area. The free service is available on the phone by
dialing 511 or online at www.511.org.
The press conference will feature a ceremonial first call to the 511 phone service as well
as demonstrations of the 511 Web portal and the online carpool/vanpool ridematching tool.

WHY:
In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission granted exclusive use of the
511 phone number to state and local transportation departments to distribute traveler
information.
The Bay Area is the largest metropolitan area in the country, and the first in California,
to activate the 511 service, which for the first time will include information from every
Bay Area transit agency and dozens of other regional partners in a single resource.
