OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 29, 2003... The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is conducting an open recruitment for Bay Area residents to serve on one of three advisory committees: the MTC Advisory Council, the Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee, and the Minority Citizens Advisory Committee. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

The purpose of the advisory committees is to involve the public in improving MTC's extensive transportation network for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. "One of the most important things that we want to do as a Commission is create a policy and vision for our future that is inclusive of our Bay Area residents and transportation interests," said MTC Vice Chair Steve Kinsey. "The members of our advisory committees provide a link to the public that is crucial to our work. I encourage anyone interested in helping us improve mobility for the region to apply for a seat."

MTC wants to ensure its advisory groups can offer a range of perspectives to inform and influence its major transportation policy and funding decisions. Seats on the three panels reflect the diversity of the Bay Area, including minority and low-income communities, users of the transportation system (such as drivers, transit riders or bicyclists), academia, architecture, engineering and public safety.

No specific educational requirements are needed, just an interest in transportation and how it affects residents of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties. Experience in working with the community or community-related issues is desirable. Committee members are expected to attend monthly meetings held at MTC's offices in Oakland during business hours and to serve a two-year term. While positions are voluntary, committee members do receive a stipend for attendance at certain meetings.

MTC's governing board of commissioners will review all applications, reserve the right to conduct interviews with applicants and will make final appointments to the advisory committees. Interested applicants are encouraged to obtain an application by calling 510.817.5757, going to MTC's website at <www.mtc.ca.gov> or visiting MTC headquarters at 101 Eighth Street, Oakland. For more information, contact the MTC Public Information Office at 510.817.5757.

MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
