OAKLAND, Calif., March 6, 2003 ... Do you know people who want to contribute their time and talent to improve Bay Area transportation? The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is seeking applicants to serve on one of three advisory committees: MTC Advisory Council, the Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee, and the Minority Citizens Advisory Committee. MTC has extended the application deadline through Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

"One of the most important things that we want to do as a Commission is create a policy and vision for our future that is inclusive of all of our Bay Area residents and transportation interests," said MTC Chair Steve Kinsey. "The members of our advisory committees provide a link to the public that is crucial to our work. I encourage anyone interested in helping us improve mobility for the region to apply for a seat."

MTC wants to ensure its three working groups include individuals who will offer a range of perspectives to inform and influence its major transportation policy and funding decisions. Seats on the three panels reflect the Bay Area's diversity, including members from ethnic minority and low-income communities, users of the transportation system (such as drivers, transit riders, or bicyclists) and representatives of academia, and architecture, engineering, labor and public safety.

No specific educational background is needed, just an interest in transportation and how it affects residents of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties. Experience in working with the community or on community-related issues is desirable. Committee members are expected to attend monthly meetings held at MTC's offices in Oakland during business hours and to serve a two-year term. While positions are voluntary, committee members do receive a stipend for their attendance at certain meetings.

MTC's governing board of commissioners will review all applications and make final appointments to the advisory committees. For more information or to obtain an application, call 510.817.5757, go to MTC's Web site at www.mtc.ca.gov or visit MTC headquarters at 101 Eighth Street, Oakland, during regular business hours.

MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
