OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 22, 2003...Are you a disabled resident of Solano or Contra Costa County? Are you interested in improving transportation for disabled persons in your community? If you answered yes to these questions, you are eligible to serve on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee.
MTC – the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area – is recruiting individuals to fill a few remaining seats on its advisory committee. The committee’s purpose is to involve older adults and persons with disabilities in improving the region’s extensive transportation network.
"One of the most important things we want to do as a Commission is create a policy and vision for our future that is inclusive of all our Bay Area residents and interests," said MTC Chair Steve Kinsey. "The members of our advisory committee provide a link to the public that is crucial to our work. I encourage anyone interested in helping us improve mobility in the region to apply for a seat."
Members of the committee are expected to maintain an ongoing engagement with organizations and individuals in the disabled community, and to voice the perspectives and concerns of that community to MTC commissioners. To help ensure that public transportation services and facilities are made fully accessible to disabled people and that the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act are adequately met, the 20-member committee reviews MTC projects, policies and funding programs, proposes positions on relevant legislation, and provides comment on state and federal statutes affecting transportation services for older adults and persons with disabilities.
No specific educational background is needed – just an active interest in transportation and how it affects residents of Solano or Contra Costa County. Experience in working with the community or on community-related issues is desirable. Committee members are expected to attend monthly meetings held at MTC’s offices in Oakland during business hours on the first Thursday of each month and to serve a two-year term. While positions are voluntary, committee members receive a stipend for their meeting attendance.
Commissioners and staff will review all applications and make final appointments to the advisory committee. For more information call 510.817.5757, go to MTC’s Web site at <www.mtc.ca.gov> or visit MTC offices at 101 Eighth Street, Oakland, during regular business hours.
