Press ReleasesFor Immediate ReleaseMTC Seeks High School Students for Paid Transportation InternshipsApplication Deadline is April 16, 2004CONTACT:Catalina Alvarado
OAKLAND, Calif., April 6, 2004...Nearly two dozen high school students from
throughout the Bay Area will be able to get paid work experience in the field of transportation this
summer through the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC)’s High School Internship Program.
MTC has set April 16 as the deadline for submittal of applications from high school students who are at
least 16 years old and will have completed the 10th, 11th or 12th grade by this June.
"The program’s purpose is to introduce students to potential careers," noted MTC Executive
Director Steve Heminger. One of MTC’s citizen advisory panels, the Minority Citizens Advisory
Committee, provided guidance in the design of the program, and assists with recruitment of high school
students.
Students will be employed, either full- or part-time, in the summer with cities and public agencies
in a department related to transportation planning or engineering, public works or public transit.
Approximately 23 paid internships ($8.25 per hour) are available throughout the nine-county San
Francisco Bay Area. Student applicants will be matched with a job site in or near the city in which
they live. Students must have completed at least the tenth grade by the start of the program, and have
a minimum grade point average of 2.8. Applications from students with grade point averages below 2.8
will be considered if accompanied by two letters of recommendation.
"This is an opportunity for students throughout the region," commented MTC Human Resources Analyst
Ann Macaulay. "We’re looking for students in Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties as well as more
urbanized parts of the Bay Area."
Interested students must submit an MTC application form (available online from the MTC Web site at
www.mtc.ca.gov, by request from MTC’s front desk at 510.817.5700 or via e-mail at
info@mtc.ca.gov), a one-page cover letter, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, school
principal or counselor.
Completed applications should be returned by Friday, April 16, 2004, although jobs are open until
filled.
MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
