OAKLAND, Calif., June 4, 2004...The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) today posted a “Help Wanted” sign, seeking a practicing or retired journalist, or a public affairs or community relations professional from a media organization to fill a vacancy on its multi-interest Advisory Council. Members of the Advisory Council serve two-year terms. Positions are unpaid, though advisors are eligible to receive a stipend for attending monthly meetings. Applications will be accepted through Friday July 2, 2004.

MTC’s Advisory Council has a broad focus, including the Bay Area’s long-range transportation plan, transportation and land use policies, funding programs and public involvement. The Advisory Council played a key role in creating MTC’s Transportation for Livable Communities (TLC) and Housing Incentive Program (HIP) initiatives. The Advisory Council is comprised of 24 representatives from throughout the nine-county Bay Area. The news media is one of four professional categories — along with architecture, construction and engineering — represented on the council. Other members represent a range of interests including the environment, business, labor, academia and freight, as well as automobile drivers, public transportation riders and users of nonmotorized transportation. Two members are appointed from each of MTC’s other advisory groups: the Minority Citizens Advisory Committee and the Elderly and Disabled Advisory Committee.

Meetings of MTC’s Advisory Council are held at the Commission’s offices in Oakland, on the second Wednesday of the month. Meetings generally run from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and are open to the public. Interested applicants are encouraged to obtain an application by calling 510.817.5757, going to MTC’s Web site at <www.mtc.ca.gov> or visiting MTC headquarters at 101 Eighth Street in Oakland. For more information, contact the MTC Public Information Office at 510.817.5757.

MTC is the regional transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
